Seoul: A six-term lawmaker from the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) has officially announced his candidacy for the position of the conservative party's new leader. This development follows the removal of former President Yoon Suk Yeol over his controversial attempt to establish martial law.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Rep. Cho Kyung-tae made his intentions known during a press conference held at the National Assembly. In his statement, Cho emphasized the necessity of a comprehensive personnel overhaul within the party to recover from the crises it faces. He highlighted that the future of the PPP and the broader conservative movement depends on extricating itself from entrenched interests that have contributed to the party's recent challenges.
Cho further committed to establishing a permanent reform committee that includes citizens, aimed at aligning the party's reform efforts with public expectations. This initiative is part of his broader strategy to rejuvenate the party and regain public trust.
The People Power Party is slated to select its new leader at a national convention scheduled for August 22. As the date approaches, Cho's candidacy marks a significant moment in the party's ongoing quest for renewal and leadership change.
