Small Biz Owners to Stage Nationwide Car Rallies amid Prolonged Social Distancing

Small business owners and self-employed people struggling from prolonged social distancing are set to stage car rallies nationwide, calling for a transition into eased quarantine.

According to a group representing the businesses on Wednesday, the rallies will be held in nine regions, including Seoul, Ulsan, North Jeolla Province, South Gyeongsang Province, and Gangwon Province from 11 p.m. until 1 a.m. Thursday.

The group said it expects two- to three-thousand vehicles to take part.

The businesses are demanding that the government transition into a system centered on individuals, promptly provide compensation for losses from social distancing, and allow the self-employed to take part in a committee on compensation.

While most of the participants plan to abide by quarantine regulations during the rallies, some plan to gather in Seoul, raising concerns over a possible clash with law enforcement.

Emphasizing that all rallies and protests, except for single-person events, are prohibited in the capital region under Level Four social distancing, police said they plan to dispatch forces to prevent violations of related laws.
