Hanoi: A South Korean woman was found dead in Vietnam near the border with Cambodia last week under unclear circumstances, police said Wednesday. The woman in her 30s was discovered near the Vietnam-Cambodia border on October 7, leading local law enforcement to investigate the cause of death.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the woman's body underwent an autopsy before being handed over to her family members for cremation. Police reported no signs of foul play were evident on the body. In response to the case, South Korean police have also initiated an internal investigation.
Authorities have secured testimony from a South Korean national who fled Cambodia after serving as a courier for borrowed-name accounts, claiming that the deceased woman had been "confined at a local hotel for an extended period of time." This revelation has gained attention amid a recent surge in crimes targeting South Koreans in Cambodia. These individuals have become victims of job scams, prompting Seoul officials to work towards repatriating approximately 60 Koreans detained in Cambodia by this weekend.
The investigation is also exploring a potential link between the deceased woman and a voice phishing gang, as authorities delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding her death.
