South Korea’s Exports Increase by 3.7% in April, Despite Drop in U.S. Shipments

Seoul: South Korea's exports experienced a 3.7 percent rise in April compared to the same period last year, continuing a streak of growth for the third month in a row. However, the country faced challenges with a notable decrease in shipments to the United States due to substantial tariffs imposed by the administration of Donald Trump.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy reported that South Korea's outbound shipments totaled US$58.2 billion in April. Meanwhile, the nation's imports fell by 2.7 percent to $53.3 billion, leading to a trade surplus of $4.88 billion.

The data further highlighted a significant decline in exports to the United States, which dropped by 6.8 percent on-year to $10.6 billion. This downturn is attributed to the heavy tariffs, impacting trade relations between the two countries.
