Seoul: A special counsel team announced on Friday that it is deliberating whether to seek a new warrant to interrogate former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who is currently jailed over allegations of election meddling. Yoon has been persistently resisting attempts to be questioned by authorities.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Assistant Special Counsel Moon Hong-ju informed reporters that the team is also contemplating indicting Yoon without pursuing another detention warrant, given his repeated disregard for summonses. On Thursday, the special counsel team, led by Min Joong-ki, was unable to execute a detention warrant for the second time, citing Yoon's "stubborn refusal" to comply.
Moon highlighted the expiration of the previous warrant and remarked on the challenges of re-filing it if deemed necessary. "There are various issues to look over, so we are in deliberation on whether to request it again," Moon stated, indicating that putting Yoon on trial without a new warrant is one of several options under consideration.
Additionally, Moon reiterated the team's preference to question Yoon in person but acknowledged the potential for indictment without a new detention warrant. Yoon has been uncooperative with the investigation into corruption allegations involving his wife, former first lady Kim Keon Hee.
Yoon has been detained at the Seoul Detention Center in Uiwang, just south of the capital, since July 10. The charges against him include his failed attempt to impose martial law in December.
