Special Counsel Extends Probe into Marine’s Death by 30 Days

Seoul: A special counsel team announced on Friday that it has extended its investigation into alleged government interference in the 2023 case of a Marine's death by 30 days. This extension follows a revision of a bill that mandates the formation of special counsel Lee Myeong-hyeon's team, allowing the investigation to continue until October 29.

According to Yonhap News Agency, assistant special counsel Choung Min-young stated during a press briefing that there are unresolved issues that require further investigation. The team has uncovered additional charges, including destruction of evidence and perjury, during the ongoing investigation. Choung confirmed that the extension was reported in writing to the National Assembly and the president earlier that morning.

Choung also mentioned that the team aims to utilize a new plea bargain mechanism introduced under the revised bill. This could potentially lead to reduced sentences for individuals who provide evidence or testimony related to the Marine's case. The investigation revolves around allegations that the administration of former President Yoon Suk Yeol interfered with an initial investigation into the death of Corporal Chae Su-geun in July 2023, allegedly to absolve certain individuals from responsibility.

Corporal Chae's death occurred when he was swept away by a swollen stream while searching for victims of heavy rains.
