Seoul: A special counsel team announced on Friday that former President Yoon Suk Yeol has been summoned to appear for questioning next Monday in connection with an investigation into his alleged attempt to impose martial law. Yoon, who is currently detained at the Seoul Detention Center following his second arrest, failed to attend a previously scheduled questioning session due to purported health issues.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the special counsel team confirmed with the detention facility that Yoon's health concerns were not sufficient to justify his absence from the questioning. Assistant special counsel Park Ji-young stated during a press briefing that Yoon's attorney was informed of the new questioning appointment set for 2 p.m. on Monday.
Yoon faces charges related to several incidents, including his alleged violation of rights by selectively summoning Cabinet members before declaring martial law on December 3. He is also accused of fabricating a martial law declaration document to legitimize his actions, which was purportedly signed by then Prime Minister Han Duck-soo and then Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun before being discarded.
Further allegations against Yoon include directing false statements to be distributed to foreign press through the presidential spokesperson, instructing the Presidential Security Service (PSS) to obstruct his detention in early January, and ordering the deletion of call records from secure phones used by military commanders.
This arrest marks the second time Yoon has been detained. His first arrest occurred in January while he was still in office; however, he was released in March after successfully petitioning the court to cancel his arrest.
