Seoul: Celebrated soprano Sumi Jo on Monday expressed gratitude for the support and love from her fans throughout her career, which culminated in her receiving a prestigious French cultural award. Last month, she was honored with France's Commandeur of the Order of Arts and Letters, the highest rank of the three-tier honor bestowed by the French Ministry of Culture, in recognition of her contributions to French art.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Sumi Jo stated, "I am wearing this medal today with gratitude, not as my personal glory but as an honor for my country. I would like to share this honor with you all," during a press conference for her upcoming opera concert, "The Magic, Sumi Jo and Winners." The concert will feature the winners of the singing competition she hosted in France last July.
She explained that the competition was designed to support young vocalists, particularly those from Asia and South America, who she believes "need a little more support to stand on the main stage in Europe." The competition's overall winner was Chinese baritone Zihao Li, followed by Romanian tenor George Ionut Virban and Korean tenor Lee Kiup.
Reflecting on receiving the French honor, she shared, "I couldn't believe when I first heard the news. I was very surprised and thought to myself I must do better in the future."
Sumi Jo also expressed her commitment to strengthening cultural ties, stating, "As the year 2026 marks the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between South Korea and France, I will work harder as a cultural envoy."
Regarding the upcoming concert, she emphasized its significance: "It would be an important opportunity for them to perform before the public following the victory."
Her dedication to nurturing young talent was evident as she mentioned, "My job is to help young artists pursue their dreams. I know it is very important to sing with them and publicize them. I am proud to witness stars being born through these performances."
Looking ahead, Sumi Jo revealed her aspirations for next year. "I've always dreamed of creating a music festival, and I hope to make that dream a reality next year," she said. "It would be my way of giving back the love I've received from my fans."
Additionally, she announced plans to release a new album next spring. "Working is fun. I am especially thrilled to be able to help others. As I am very aware that many people helped me get to where I am today, I'd love to give back and help others in return," she concluded.
