Supreme Court Probes Allegations Against Judge Visiting Hostess Bar

Seoul: The Supreme Court announced on Friday that it is investigating claims suggesting that a judge involved in the trial of former President Yoon Suk Yeol was allegedly entertained at a high-end hostess bar on several occasions.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Rep. Kim Yong-min, a member of the liberal Democratic Party, revealed earlier this week during a parliamentary session that Judge Jee Kui-youn of the Seoul Central District Court allegedly frequented a hostess bar multiple times without paying the substantial costs, estimated between 1 million won (US$716) and 2 million won per visit.

The specifics of the alleged visits, including the timing and details of Jee's association with other individuals involved, remain undisclosed. The ethical inspection bureau of the Supreme Court stated that they are thoroughly examining the situation using materials from the National Assembly, media reports, and additional sources to ascertain the truth of the allegations. They emphasized their commitment to taking appropriate legal actions if any misconduct is confirmed.

Jee is currently presiding over the trial of former President Yoon, who faces insurrection charges following his declaration of martial law on December 3. Additionally, Jee previously made headlines for canceling Yoon's arrest in March. The Democratic Party has intensified its demands for Jee's removal from the trial, contending that the alleged visits could constitute a breach of anti-graft laws.

Meanwhile, the Seoul Central District Court refrained from commenting on the allegations, citing their abstract nature and the absence of verified evidence.
