Ten innovations by Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) personnel have been submitted for patent registration with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO). Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the initiative aims to protect the intellectual property rights of high-impact innovations with potential applications across all services under the ministry.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, this marks the first time in MINDEFs innovation history that such a significant number of patent applications have been submitted to MyIPO. These applications are in the registration process to safeguard the creations of the ministrys innovation champions. The announcement was made during the launch of MINDEFs 2025 Integrity and Innovation Day at Wisma Pertahanan, attended by Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari, deputy secretary-general (Policy) Mohd Yani Daud, and Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) director Mohamad Zakkuan Talib.
Among the innovations is the portable Free Energy Water Pump (FEWP) 2.0, which operates on solar energy and serves as a water filter, providing clean water in conflict or disaster zones. The Defence Minister also praised MINDEF personnel for winning six gold, three silver, and two bronze medals in international innovation competitions held in South Korea and Indonesia.
He highlighted that MINDEF innovations have gained international recognition at the Defence Services Asia (DSA) 2024 and the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) 2025, not only saving the government millions of ringgit but also enhancing defence readiness. Mohamed Khaled emphasized that integrity and innovation are complementary values and are central to this years celebration theme: Pertahanan Berintegriti, Inovasi Berkualiti, Aspirasi Malaysia MADANI.
He further stressed that integrity is a fundamental pillar for building advanced and civilised societies and organisations, serving as a safeguard against leakages, breaches of trust, and abuse of power. At MINDEF, the responsibility extends beyond managing billions in procurement to safeguarding national security, sovereignty, and the welfare of personnel who sacrifice for the country.
The event also celebrated the achievements of 18 winners of the ministry-level Innovation and Creative Group (KIK) competition, four jury-choice winners, and 11 winners of the Seoul International Invention Fair (SIIF 2024) and the International Invention, Innovation and Design (IID 2025) competitions.
