Seoul: Apple iPhone users in South Korea can now use the country's Tmoney prepaid transit cards from their devices following the launch of technical support for the feature via Apple Wallet on Tuesday. This development allows both Apple Watch and iPhone users to add their Tmoney card to the Apple Wallet app, enabling them to pay fares for bus or subway rides.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the system currently supports only prepaid recharges via Tmoney, excluding postpaid cards, the Climate Companion Card, and the K-Pass feature. Users can recharge their Tmoney balance within the Apple Wallet using Hyundai Card, which is the only domestic credit card that currently supports Apple Pay.
Additional recharge options are available through a separate Mobile Tmoney app. The use of Apple Pay, which was introduced in South Korea in March 2023, has been primarily limited to select convenience stores and franchise retailers. The absence of support for transit payments had previously been identified as a barrier to broader adoption in the local market.
