Seoul: The first trial session for Rep. Kweon Seong-dong of the main opposition People Power Party (PPP), who has been indicted for violating the political fund law, was initially scheduled for Tuesday but has been postponed to next month.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the initial hearing on Kweon's case was set to occur at the Seoul Central District Court at 5 p.m. on Tuesday. However, the court decided to delay the session to the following Monday due to delays in proceedings for another case.
Kweon was indicted by special counsel Min Joong-ki on October 2. The charges against him involve receiving 100 million won (equivalent to US$69,800) in illegal political funds from a former Unification Church official in January 2022. This transaction allegedly took place after the official requested Kweon's assistance in obtaining favors for the church from the government following the presidential election of then-PPP candidate Yoon Suk Yeol.
Kweon, who is serving his fifth term as a lawmaker, was the PPP's floor leader until June. He was previously recognized as one of President Yoon's close confidants.
