Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump announced during a Cabinet meeting that South Korean conglomerate Samsung Electronics Co. is planning to build "massive" production facilities in the United States. This development, he claims, is a direct result of his administration's tariff policies. The announcement was made as Trump highlighted his policy achievements during his first 100 days in office, despite a recent Commerce Department report indicating a 0.3 percent annual decline in the U.S. gross domestic product for the first quarter.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Trump stated that Samsung's decision to consider relocating some of its television and home appliance production to the U.S. is a response to the newly imposed tariffs. He emphasized that the tariffs are part of a broader strategy to increase federal revenue, attract foreign investment, boost domestic manufacturing, and reduce trade deficits. Trump argued that companies manufacturing in the U.S. are exempt from these tariffs, thereby encouraging more investments like Samsung's potential expansion.
The Commerce Department's report, which outlined the GDP contraction adjusted for seasonal factors and inflation, marks the U.S. economy's worst performance in three years. This downturn is attributed partly to the impact of the new tariff policies. In response, Trump took to social media to shift some blame onto his predecessor, Joe Biden, for leaving behind "bad numbers." He urged patience, asserting that the tariffs would soon have positive effects as companies increasingly move operations to the U.S.
Trump's social media post on Truth Social reiterated his belief in the long-term benefits of his economic policies. He urged Americans to remain patient, promising a forthcoming economic boom once the so-called "Biden 'Overhang'" is resolved. Despite the current economic challenges, the President remains optimistic about the transformative potential of his tariff strategy on the U.S. economy.
