Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump warned Monday he will impose additional 50 percent tariffs on China if Beijing does not withdraw its retaliatory 34 percent tariffs against the United States, while noting tariff negotiations with other countries will kick off "immediately."
According to Yonhap News Agency, Trump issued the warning in a social media post as China announced a plan Friday to impose 34 percent tariffs on imports from the United States following his announcement that the U.S. will impose 34 percent "reciprocal" tariffs on Chinese goods starting Wednesday.
The warning also came as the White House dismissed media reports as "fake news" regarding Trump considering pausing the implementation of new U.S. tariffs for 90 days.
"If China does not withdraw its 34% increase above their already long term trading abuses by tomorrow, April 8th, 2025, the United States will impose ADDITIONAL Tariffs on China of 50%, effective April 9th," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
"Additionally, all talks with China concerning their requested meetings with us will be terminated! Negotiations with other countries, which have also requested meetings, will begin taking place immediately," he added.
