Daejeon: The LG Twins staged a thrilling ninth-inning rally to defeat the Hanwha Eagles 7-4 on Thursday, moving within a win of capturing the Korean Series title. A day after conceding six runs in the eighth inning to lose Game 3 by 7-3, the Twins turned the tables by scoring six times in Game 4 of the best-of-seven Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) championship series at Daejeon Hanwha Life Ballpark.
According to Yonhap News Agency, with a 3-1 series lead, the Twins can clinch their second title in three seasons with a win in Game 5, scheduled back in Daejeon at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The Twins entered the ninth inning trailing 4-1, but Oh Ji-hwan drew a leadoff walk against reliever Kim Seo-hyeon, igniting their comeback. Park Dong-won then launched a two-run home run, closing the gap to a one-run game.
With the Twins still trailing 4-3 and down to their final strike, Kim Hyun-soo delivered a crucial two-run single off reliever Park Sang-won, giving the Twins a 5-4 lead. Moon Bo-gyeong followed with an RBI double, and Austin Dean ended his 0-for-15 slump with a single that extended the lead to 7-4.
The Eagles’ starting pitcher, Ryan Weiss, had delivered an impressive performance, allowing just one run over 7 2/3 innings and striking out seven. The Eagles initially took the lead, with a groundout by Ha Ju-suk driving in the first run in the opening inning. Despite threatening in the fifth inning, the Twins were unable to capitalize until their late-game surge.
The Eagles added to their lead in the seventh inning with Moon Hyun-bin’s two-run single, and Choi Jae-hoon’s single in the eighth provided an insurance run. However, the ninth inning saw Kim Seo-hyeon’s struggles continue. After walking Oh Ji-hwan, he gave up Park Dong-won’s home run, which was followed by a series of strategic plays that ultimately led to the Twins’ victory.
Twins closer You Young-chan secured the win by getting the final three outs in the bottom of the ninth, bringing the team one step closer to claiming the title.
