Seoul: Unification Minister Chung Dong-young announced his request for the European Union (EU) to appoint a special envoy dedicated to Korean Peninsula affairs, aiming to bolster the EU's involvement in peace initiatives across the region.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Chung conveyed his proposal to Olof Skoog, the deputy secretary general for political affairs at the European External Action Service. This discussion occurred during Chung's recent visit to Belgium as part of a broader European tour. During the talks, Chung emphasized the potential positive impact of an EU special envoy in fostering peaceful coexistence between the two Koreas. Skoog reportedly expressed a willingness to seriously consider the proposal.
In a separate meeting with French Ambassador to South Korea Philippe Bertoux, Chung reiterated his appeal for the EU's increased attention and participation in resolving Korean Peninsula issues. He also encouraged France to enhance its engagement in peace efforts, noting that France and Estonia remain the only European nations without diplomatic relations with North Korea.
