White House Urges Global Economies to Align AI Development with U.S. Technology

Incheon: A White House official has urged major global economies to collaborate with the United States in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, warning against adopting Europe's "overregulated" model, which could hinder their progress in the global tech race.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Michael Kratsios, director for the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, made these remarks at an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) ministerial meeting. During his keynote speech, Kratsios emphasized that countries have a "choice" regarding the direction they take in AI development.

Kratsios highlighted that the APEC economies face a critical decision: either follow the European model, which he described as driven by "fear and overregulation," or collaborate with the U.S. to advance AI technology. He stressed the importance of adopting an approach that leverages American AI infrastructure to achieve technological breakthroughs.

Speaking at a digital forum during the APEC Digital and AI Ministerial Meeting in Incheon, Kratsios underscored the reshaping influence of AI on global commerce. The U.S. is determined to enable its private companies to address the needs of partnering countries for mutual benefit, he noted.

Kratsios acknowledged the concerns of governments and businesses regarding data privacy and advocated for open-source models as potential industry standards. He asserted that technological progress should be rooted in political freedom rather than global governance.

During the meeting, Kratsios also engaged in discussions with Science Minister Bae Kyung-hoon about AI-related policies and collaboration efforts, as reported by the science ministry.
