SEOUL, President Yoon Suk Yeol instructed Prime Minister Han Duck-soo on Monday to make every effort to prepare emergency measures against an escalating doctors’ walkout, his office said.
Yoon gave the instruction during a weekly meeting with the prime minister the same day medical professors at hospitals affiliated with Seoul National University began an indefinite walkout in support of trainee doctors who have remained off the job since February in protest of the government’s medical school admissions hike plan.
“Please make every effort to prepare emergency measures related to the medical community’s illegal rejection of patients,” Yoon was quoted as saying, characterizing the walkout as illegal.
The country’s biggest doctors’ group, the Korean Medical Association, has also vowed to launch a walkout on Tuesday.
