7 in 10 Households Shift to Online Shopping for Processed Foods in 2024

Seoul: Seven in 10 households made online purchases of processed foods in 2024, a survey showed Tuesday, marking a sharp increase from a year earlier and a significant change in where and how people shop.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the survey conducted by the Korea Rural Economic Institute revealed that 72.3 percent of households purchased processed foods online last year. This marks a significant increase from 2023, where the figure stood at around 50 percent.

The shift to online purchasing was particularly notable among younger demographics. The survey highlighted that 96.2 percent of individuals in their 30s and 90.3 percent of those in their 20s have made online purchases of processed foods. This trend suggests a generational shift towards more digital shopping habits.

Additionally, the frequency of online shopping is on the rise. The survey found that the proportion of respondents who shop at least once a week grew from 16.4 percent in 2019 to 37.8 percent last year. This indicates a growing reliance on online platforms for regular grocery needs.

The survey also pointed out a change in the priorities of consumers. "The number of households that take into account the safety, freshness and convenience in purchasing and cooking increased compared to a year ago, while they think less about the taste, price, quality and nutrition (in their purchase)," a researcher noted, reflecting a shift in consumer values and considerations.
