Cheongju: The Air Force initiated a large-scale aerial combat exercise on Monday, known as the Soaring Eagle, designed to counter North Korea's provocations. This biannual event has mobilized a formidable array of aircraft, including the F-35A stealth fighter, as part of a strategic deterrence effort, officials reported.According to Yonhap News Agency, the five-day Soaring Eagle exercise commenced at an air base in Cheongju, located approximately 110 kilometers south of Seoul. The exercise involves around 60 warplanes, such as the F-15K and KF-16 fighters, the E-737 early warning and control aircraft, and the KC-330 tanker transport aircraft, all contributing to the Air Force's readiness for potential threats.Approximately 190 personnel are participating in the exercise, engaging in defensive counter air maneuvers and air interdiction drills. These activities are conducted under various scenarios, including hypothetical infiltration by enemy air forces, providing a comprehensive training environment. The space operations group, which was established in June, is participating in the regular drills for the first time. Their role includes monitoring and documenting signs of enemy threats using spy satellites and multipurpose satellites, ensuring a robust response capability, as stated by the Air Force. The Soaring Eagle exercise, launched in 2008, has been a consistent part of the Air Force's training regimen, taking place twice each year to maintain and enhance operational readiness.
