Seoul: Ryu Seung-min, the 2004 Olympic table tennis gold medalist and a former member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), has officially declared his candidacy for the presidency of the Korean Sport and Olympic Committee (KSOC).According to Yonhap News Agency, Ryu, 42, made his announcement at a press conference in Seoul, where he expressed his intent to participate in the upcoming KSOC presidential election scheduled for January 14, 2025. The current KSOC president, Lee Kee-heung, has not yet officially stated whether he will seek a third term, though such a move is anticipated. Several other candidates, including Kang Tae-sun, Ahn Sang-soo, and Park Chang-beom, have also entered the race.Ryu, who served on the IOC's Athletes' Commission from 2016 to 2024 and as vice chair since 2021, also held the position of president of the Korea Table Tennis Association from 2019 to 2024. His candidacy comes amid scrutiny on Lee, who has been suspended by the sports ministry due to allegations involving mis conduct, such as improper hiring practices and fund misappropriation.During his announcement, Ryu outlined his vision for the KSOC, focusing on improving the financial independence of the organization, ensuring the autonomy of regional sports associations and governing bodies, developing support systems for athletes and coaches, and revitalizing school sports programs. He emphasized the need for proactive changes within the KSOC and highlighted the unifying and inspirational potential of sports.Ryu aims to leverage his extensive background as an athlete, coach, and sports administrator to contribute positively to the sports community.
