The family, consisting of Kim Man-cheol and ten of his family members, successfully defected to South Korea after an arduous journey that took them through Japan and Taiwan, eventually arriving in Seoul on February 8, 1987.

In 1990, South Korea and Algeria took a diplomatic step forward by agreeing to establish official diplomatic relations, reflecting South Korea's expanding international presence.
In 2008, the head of South Korea's National Intelligence Service, Kim Man-bok, offered to resign following a leak of sensitive information.
