Captain of Ulsan HD FC Unfazed by Grueling 2025 Schedule

Seoul: The 2025 football season is shaping up to be a demanding one for Ulsan HD FC, the reigning champions of South Korea's K League 1, as they prepare to defend their title while participating in multiple prestigious tournaments. Despite the packed schedule, team captain Kim Young-gwon remains confident and composed.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Ulsan HD FC will not only aim for their fourth consecutive K League 1 title but will also compete in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League Elite tournament, the Korea Cup, and the expanded FIFA Club World Cup in the United States starting in June. The season's early commencement on February 15 has shortened the offseason, yet Kim believes this will not hinder their performance.

Kim expressed his optimism during the K League 1 season-opening media day held at the Korea Football Association House in Seoul. "We're preparing for four competitions this year and we've been working hard to get the results we want at all four of them," Kim stated. "Now it's time for us to show people what we are capable of. We want to go as high as we can at all four competitions."

Ulsan's journey to the top has been marked by resilience, having fended off Gangwon FC's late-season challenge last year to secure their third straight league title. Kim highlighted the team's experience as a key strength, noting the continuity of players who have contributed to their recent successes.

Regarding the shorter offseason, Kim remarked, "Personally, I think having a long offseason doesn't always help players. We've tried to keep things short and sweet this year. We just have to roll with it and enjoy the circumstances. Personally, I like this setup."

Other teams are also gearing up for the new season with varying strategies. Pohang Steelers, who defeated Ulsan in the Korea Cup final last November, have maintained most of their squad. Defender Jeon Min-gwang emphasized the advantage of team stability, aiming to end a 12-year league title drought.

Gwangju FC, facing financial constraints, have seen player departures without significant replacements. Despite finishing ninth last year after a strong third-place finish in 2023, captain Lee Min-gi remains undeterred, focusing on collective team efforts over individual reliance.

Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors underwent a managerial change by appointing former Sunderland boss Gus Poyet. Captain Park Jin-seob noted Poyet's emphasis on conditioning and mental fortitude, fostering a competitive environment within the team.

As the 2025 season unfolds, Ulsan HD FC and their competitors are set to navigate a challenging path filled with opportunities to showcase their prowess on both domestic and international stages.
