U.S. Navy Secretary Expected to Visit South Korea for Shipbuilding Talks

Seoul: U.S. Secretary of the Navy John Phelan is anticipated to visit South Korea as early as next week to discuss shipbuilding cooperation, sources with knowledge of the matter revealed Thursday. The trip aligns with the Donald Trump administration's initiatives focusing on enhancing this sector.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Phelan's office has finalized the plan and is currently working on the details of the itinerary with South Korean government officials and relevant industries. During his visit, Phelan is likely to tour major South Korean shipyards such as HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hanwha Ocean. Discussions are expected to center on cooperation in the maintenance, repair, and operations of fleet.

President Donald Trump has underscored shipbuilding as a critical area for U.S.-South Korea cooperation, aiming to revitalize the industry under his "America First" policy. Earlier this month, Trump emphasized the importance of this collaboration during his phone conversation with acting President Han Duck-soo.
