Seoul: People Power Party (PPP) candidate Kim Moon-soo met with former President Lee Myung-bak on Tuesday, seeking his support to bolster conservative backing as the election campaign enters its final week. During their luncheon at a hotel in Seoul, Lee offered his support to Kim, while also taking a swipe at Democratic Party (DP) candidate Lee Jae-myung.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee Myung-bak remarked that if DP's Lee Jae-myung were to become president, he would "rule the country," whereas Kim Moon-soo would "lead and manage the country." This statement was relayed by Rep. Shin Dong-wook, the PPP's chief spokesperson. Lee further commended Kim's extensive experience in both labor and business, highlighting his understanding of the struggles faced by workers and business leaders.
Lee also shared insights from his own campaign experience, recounting his efforts in 2007 to gain support from independent candidate Lee Hoi-Chang, suggesting that Kim should demonstrate "sincere efforts" to unify his candidacy with Lee Jun-seok of the New Reform Party. This unification is seen as a strategic move to present a stronger challenge against DP's Lee.
Additionally, Lee Myung-bak advised Kim to prioritize a visit to the United States if elected, voicing concerns over trade relations post-President Donald Trump's tenure. He expressed skepticism about DP's Lee's ability to engage effectively with U.S. officials, suggesting that Washington is aware of Lee's true stance despite his centrist or pro-American claims.
Kim's recent meeting with former President Park Geun-hye in Daegu underscores his strategy to solidify conservative votes ahead of the June 3 election. Recent polls indicate that Kim has been closing the gap with DP's Lee, the current frontrunner, largely due to increased conservative support.
