Ulsan: SK Group, a South Korean conglomerate spanning from chip manufacturing to construction, has announced plans to establish the country's largest artificial intelligence (AI) data center in collaboration with Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS).
According to Yonhap News Agency, the project is set to commence later this month, with a groundbreaking ceremony anticipated in August. Industry sources have indicated that while the companies have been progressing on the initiative, specific timelines and further details remain under deliberation. An SK Group spokesperson confirmed ongoing efforts but noted that finalizations are pending.
The upcoming facility will be situated in the Mipo industrial complex in Ulsan, approximately 305 kilometers southeast of Seoul. It is designed to house 60,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) and will boast a power capacity of 100 megawatts, positioning it as the first AI infrastructure of such magnitude in South Korea.
Ryu Young-sang, CEO of SK Telecom Co., had previously disclosed plans to develop a hyperscale AI data center with 60,000 GPUs in partnership with a global technology leader during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 event in Spain in March.
SK Telecom is poised to invest a total of 3.4 trillion won (US$2.49 billion) in AI infrastructure by 2028, with a considerable portion expected to be allocated to this data center project. AWS, as a subsidiary of Amazon, offers on-demand cloud computing platforms and application programming interfaces (APIs) to a diverse clientele, including individuals, businesses, and governments, on a pay-per-use basis.
