Unification Minister Proposes Adjusting South Korea-U.S. Military Drills to President Lee

Seoul: New Unification Minister Chung Dong-young announced plans to propose adjustments to the joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States to President Lee Jae Myung. This move was revealed shortly after North Korea criticized the exercises, accusing South Korea of unwavering loyalty to its alliance with Washington.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Chung disclosed his intentions to reporters, affirming his plan to discuss the potential adjustments with President Lee. The announcement came in response to statements from Kim Yo-jong, the influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. She condemned the current administration's adherence to the U.S. alliance and stated that North Korea would not engage in talks with Seoul under these circumstances.

Kim Yo-jong's accusations highlighted ongoing military exercises with the United States, suggesting that President Lee's stance aligns with that of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, known for his stringent policies toward North Korea. In response, Chung emphasized a shift in policy under the Lee administration, signaling a departure from Yoon's approach to military exercises with the U.S.

The annual large-scale Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise between South Korea and the U.S. is scheduled to begin in mid-August.
