Seoul: President Lee Jae Myung on Monday urged citizens to participate in a nationwide weeklong campaign to prepare for the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit scheduled for late next month.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee used a Facebook post to declare this week as a special "cleanup week" aimed at welcoming "families and foreigners" to South Korea during Chuseok, one of the country's significant traditional holidays occurring on October 3 this year, as well as the APEC summit, which will be held from October 31 to November 1 in the southeastern city of Gyeongju.
Lee mentioned that residents and volunteers are planning to collaborate for an intensive cleanup in areas with inadequate living conditions and around traditional markets. Despite the importance of the campaign, Lee indicated that he will not be able to participate in person due to his scheduled attendance at the U.N. General Assembly in New York.
Lee embarked on a five-day trip earlier in the day to deliver his inaugural address to the annual U.N. gathering since assuming office in June.
