Phnom penh: Around 100 cases of South Korean nationals being abducted or confined in Cambodia over the past two years remain unresolved, as reported by the South Korean Embassy in Cambodia. This information was disclosed during an on-site parliamentary audit in Phnom Penh, highlighting increasing concerns over crimes targeting South Koreans in the Southeast Asian nation.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the embassy shared that while reports of such incidents involving South Korean nationals were under 20 in 2023, the numbers surged to 220 in 2024 and had reached 330 by August of the current year. Out of the 550 cases reported in the last two years, 450 have been resolved, leaving approximately 100 individuals still unaccounted for.
During the audit, lawmakers from the parliamentary foreign affairs and unification committee pushed for comprehensive measures to address and mitigate crimes against South Koreans in Cambodia. The continued rise in these incidents underscores the need for immediate and effective action.
