Seoul: Samsung SDI Co. announced its collaboration with German automaker BMW AG to develop next-generation all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) for automobiles. This strategic partnership aims to advance the technology and integration of ASSBs in vehicles, marking a significant move in the automotive and battery industries.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the collaboration will also involve the U.S.-based battery material firm Solid Power Inc. The trio will undertake a joint validation project focused on evaluating the performance of ASSB cells. These efforts are geared toward integrating the advanced battery technology into BMW's next-generation evaluation vehicles.
Samsung SDI is tasked with supplying ASSB cells, developed using Solid Power's solid electrolyte, to BMW. Subsequently, BMW will focus on the development of modules and packs for these batteries. The use of solid electrolytes in ASSBs, as opposed to the liquid electrolytes used in conventional lithium-ion batteries, promises higher energy density and improved safety. This technological advancement is expected to enhance the driving range of electric vehicles significantly.
Go Joo-young, executive vice president of Samsung SDI's ASSB commercialization team, highlighted the importance of technological competitiveness in batteries as a driver of innovation in electric vehicles. He emphasized Samsung SDI's commitment to working closely with global partners like BMW and Solid Power to lead the commercialization of ASSBs.
