Seoul: Acting President Han Duck-soo declared his commitment to resolving pressing national issues upon his reinstatement, following the Constitutional Court's decision to dismiss his impeachment. He emphasized his dedication to addressing these challenges during a public address, marking his return to office 87 days after being impeached by the National Assembly for his alleged involvement in suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol's declaration of martial law on December 3.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Han expressed his intent to ensure stable governance under the framework of the Constitution and the law. In his national address, he highlighted the importance of safeguarding national interests amid the current trade war, which he noted has become an undeniable reality. Han pointed to the evolving economic and geopolitical conditions following U.S. President Donald Trump's inauguration as critical areas of focus.
Han also appealed for national unity, addressing the polarization stemming from Yoon's impeachment, with a crucial verdict anticipated shortly. Reflecting on his nearly five decades of public service, Han remarked on the population's desire for forward movement and progress rather than partisan extremes.
During his first day back in office, Han received briefings on wildfire relief operations and directed authorities to intensify their efforts against the fires that have been devastating the nation since Friday. Additionally, he instructed the defense ministry to enhance military readiness and urged the foreign ministry to boost diplomatic initiatives, reinforcing alliances with the United States and other partner countries amid current global uncertainties.
To counteract growing concerns about social unrest due to ongoing political instability, Han tasked the police with maintaining rigorous monitoring of outdoor protests and enforcing strict measures against unlawful activities.
