Bangladeshs Leadership at UNESCO Hailed as Diplomatic Milestone

Education Adviser Professor Dr. Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar has emphasized that Bangladeshs election as the President of the 43rd General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) represents a significant milestone in the realm of international diplomacy.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Prof. Abrar expressed in an exclusive interview that this achievement offers Bangladesh a remarkable chance to lead an influential UN body like UNESCO amidst the current global scenario, especially by outpacing a formidable contender like Japan. He highlighted that the recognition from several heads of state, delegations, and ministers at the conference is a testament to this diplomatic victory.

Prof. Abrar further noted that congratulations poured in from Western, African, and Arab nations, acknowledging Bangladeshs accomplishment. He attributed this success to the countrys soft power and its rich cultural heritage, particularly International Mother Language Day, which played a crucial role in securing this leadership position. This development has solidified Bangladeshs standing on the global stage.

The election took place during the 222nd session of the UNESCO Executive Board in Paris on October 7, where Bangladesh secured the presidency by a narrow 30-27 vote margin against Japan. Although South Korea and India were initially in the running, both nations eventually withdrew their candidacies. This victory is widely regarded as a major diplomatic success and a cultural honor for Bangladesh, given the UNESCO General Conferences role in shaping global education, science, and culture policies.

The 43rd UNESCO Conference commenced on October 30 at the Silk Road Conference Center in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, and is set to continue until November 13. For the first time, a Bangladeshi, Education Adviser Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar, chaired the meeting. Following the conference, the education adviser returned to Bangladesh on November 7.

In addition to Prof. Abrar, Bangladeshs permanent representative to UNESCO, Khondker M Talha, and representatives from various countries attended the conference.
