Dodgers Promote South Korean Infielder Kim Hye-seong for MLB Debut

Atlanta: South Korean infielder Kim Hye-seong is set to make his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers after spending the initial part of the season in the minors. The Dodgers announced Kim's promotion from Triple-A Oklahoma City prior to their road game against the Atlanta Braves.According to Yonhap News Agency, the Dodgers made the decision following infielder Tommy Edman being placed on the 10-day injured list due to right ankle inflammation, effective retroactively from Wednesday. Kim's arrival at Truist Park in Atlanta was just two hours before the scheduled first pitch, which was delayed due to rain.Once Kim steps onto the field, he will become the 28th South Korean player to participate in an MLB game. He joins a notable group that includes San Francisco Giants outfielder Lee Jung-hoo, who was Kim's former teammate in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO). Kim secured a three-year contract with the Dodgers in January valued at $12.5 million, with an option for two additiona l years potentially increasing the total to $22 million.Kim, recognized for his defensive versatility and skill, aimed to make the Dodgers' Opening Day roster. However, he struggled during spring training, managing a .207 batting average with 11 strikeouts in 29 at-bats while adjusting his swing. In Triple-A, Kim improved, posting a .252 batting average with an on-base plus slugging of .798, alongside five home runs, 19 RBIs, and 13 steals in 28 games. The opportunity to join the Dodgers arose following Edman's injury.In a pre-game interview, Kim expressed his surprise and excitement about the call-up, stating his readiness after being informed by his Triple-A manager. Despite early challenges with his swing, Kim remains confident in his progress and looks forward to contributing to the team.Dodgers manager Dave Roberts praised Kim's performance in Triple-A, highlighting his versatility in playing multiple positions and his baserunning skills.
