Seoul: Former Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon on Tuesday announced his support for People Power Party (PPP) candidate Kim Moon-soo in the upcoming elections. Lee's endorsement comes as part of his efforts to prevent the election of Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party (DP), whom he referred to as a potential "monster dictatorship."
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee Nak-yon, who currently serves as an executive adviser for the New Future Democratic Party and was previously affiliated with the DP, made the endorsement during a news conference. He emphasized the importance of cooperation with the PPP candidate, Kim Moon-soo, to avert what he perceives as a threat to democratic governance. In his address, Lee also committed to working on constitutional amendments as part of the preparations for the Seventh Republic.
Lee, who served as a five-term lawmaker before leaving the DP last year, acknowledged his existing differences with Kim Moon-soo but stated that Kim is the most viable candidate to defeat Lee Jae-myung. Despite his departure from the DP, Lee's decision to support Kim underscores his determination to influence the outcome of the election.
Recent polls indicate that DP's Lee Jae-myung has been leading the race, though the margin between him and Kim Moon-soo has decreased in the final stretch of the campaign, with only a week remaining before the decisive vote.
