GM Korea Holds Strategic Meeting with Government Amid U.S. Tariff Concerns

Seoul: GM Korea Co., the South Korean subsidiary of General Motors Co., engaged in discussions with government officials to address the potential implications of the proposed auto tariffs by the Trump administration, as per sources.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the meeting, which was held behind closed doors, included GM Korea representatives and Deputy Trade Minister Park Jong-won, along with other officials from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. The primary agenda was to deliberate on the impact of the U.S. tariff proposal on GM Korea's operations.

While specific details of the discussions remain undisclosed, it is anticipated that both parties focused on the ramifications of the proposed 25 percent tariffs on imported automobiles. The announcement from the Trump administration has raised concerns, especially given the significant share of GM Korea's exports to the U.S., which constitute 85 percent of its total sales.

The potential tariffs have sparked speculation about GM Korea's future in South Korea. During an investors conference on January 29, Paul Jacobson, GM Korea's chief financial officer, suggested that the company might have to contemplate relocating its manufacturing operations should the tariffs be implemented on a permanent basis.
