Hwang Dong-hyuk Explains Final Message of ‘Squid Game’

Seoul: The protagonist of "Squid Game," Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), is no hero. Yet, in the series' final moments, he makes a profoundly heroic choice that symbolizes how ordinary people can create a better world, according to the series creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Hwang stated, "He is not an extraordinary man with some kind of supernatural power. He simply made the best decision possible for him," during an interview with local reporters in Seoul. Hwang elaborated on the theme that meaningful change comes from the ground up, emphasizing that the world can't be changed for the better by a few but by the small acts of ordinary people like Gi-hun.

Netflix's Korean original series aired its last six episodes Friday, concluding the story of Gi-hun and the hundreds of desperate contestants. While the latest season debuted atop the streaming platform's global chart, the finale received sharply divided reactions from viewers. Hwang noted that he was not surprised, acknowledging that the show's meteoric rise created high expectations.

Hwang explained the different desires of the audience, saying, "Some hoped to see more exciting games, while others wanted more serious social commentary, and still others hoped for deeper narratives about their favorite characters." He expressed understanding for all responses, whether positive or negative.

Hwang also revealed that he had initially planned a different ending for Gi-hun but changed direction while writing the script. He aimed to convey a message about the worsening state of the world, mentioning issues like economic difficulties, social inequality, and climate change. He criticized the lack of concrete actions to resolve these crises and highlighted the selfishness of rich countries and older generations.

Hwang introduced the baby of contestant No. 222 as a symbol for future generations, urging action before it's too late. Regarding the Front Man, portrayed by Lee Byung-hun, Hwang described him as a conflicted character who both hates and admires Gi-hun. The Front Man's attempt to corrupt Gi-hun ultimately failed, and his gesture of returning Gi-hun's belongings to his daughter signified respect.

The potential for a spinoff exists, as both Hwang and actor Lee have hinted at exploring the Front Man's largely unexplored past, which remains open for new narratives.
