Impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol Proposes Constitutional Revision if Reinstated

Seoul: Impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol announced on Tuesday his intention to prioritize revising the Constitution if reinstated, indicating a willingness to possibly step down before the conclusion of his five-year term. Yoon's statement came during his final address to the Constitutional Court, which is set to decide by mid-March on the validity of his impeachment due to his brief imposition of martial law in December.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Yoon expressed his commitment to amending the Constitution to better align with societal changes. "I will gather the will of the people and swiftly push for a constitutional amendment," Yoon stated, emphasizing the potential for political reform to unite a divided populace. He hinted at a possible shift from the current single five-year presidential term to two four-year terms, potentially affecting his tenure.

Yoon also highlighted his focus on foreign relations, specifically strengthening ties with the U.S. and fostering trilateral cooperation with Japan. Domestically, he proposed delegating more authority to the prime minister.

In his defense against insurrection charges for declaring martial law on December 3, Yoon dismissed the accusations, citing the limited military presence and timeframe involved. He apologized for any "confusion and inconvenience" his actions caused.

The impeachment motion accuses Yoon of constitutional violations by declaring martial law without a national emergency or proper procedures. Yoon defended his actions as responses to opposition party challenges, including repeated impeachments and budget cuts.

Legal experts anticipate a court ruling within two weeks, potentially leading to a snap presidential election if Yoon is removed, or his continuation in office until May 2027 if reinstated.

During closing arguments, Yoon's legal team argued for dismissal of the impeachment, attributing his martial law decision to opposition actions. The National Assembly prosecution countered, advocating for Yoon's removal due to constitutional violations.

Rep. Jung Chung-rai of the main opposition Democratic Party called for Yoon's removal, citing the president's alleged undermining of the Constitution and National Assembly.
