Seoul: South Korea's top military officer on Thursday called for a firm readiness posture to effectively respond to North Korea's evolving military threats, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said. JCS Chairman Adm. Kim Myung-soo made the remarks as he inspected the Army's 5th Corps in Pocheon, some 40 kilometers north of Seoul.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim emphasized the need for "more meticulous" surveillance and analysis of North Korean activities in the border areas. He noted that North Korea's realistic warfare capabilities have advanced, particularly due to its troop deployment to Russia. Kim underscored the importance of South Korean troops being prepared to respond to any North Korean provocations while prioritizing their safety.
Last week, the JCS reported that North Korea appears to have sent 3,000 additional troops to Russia in January and February. This development has raised concerns about the deepening military alignment between Pyongyang and Moscow, and the potential for Moscow to transfer advanced arms technologies to North Korea.
