Seoul: The managers for the two leading teams in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) have called for the swift adoption of a rule that would permit teams to challenge on-field check-swing calls. This demand follows a controversial decision that highlighted the need for such a system.
According to Yonhap News Agency, LG Twins manager Youm Kyoung-youb expressed his support for the challenge system before a game against the Hanwha Eagles at Jamsil Baseball Stadium. The conversation was sparked by an incident where a controversial decision favored the Twins, despite replays showing player Lee Young-bin had failed to check his swing. Youm noted that while the decision worked in their favor, such calls can heavily influence the outcome of games and increase pressure on umpires.
The KBO has already introduced the check-swing challenge system in its Futures League, the minor league, with plans to extend it to the major league soon. Currently, check-swing calls cannot be reviewed in the KBO. With the proposed challenge system, teams will have the ability to request a video replay of a check-swing decision and potentially overturn it. Youm suggested implementing the system after the All-Star break or by next year at the latest, emphasizing that existing broadcast feeds could be used without installing new cameras.
Eagles manager Kim Kyung-moon supported Youm's call for a swift implementation. Kim, who had previously sought an explanation from umpires following the uncalled swing by Lee, urged the KBO to be as proactive with this change as they have been with others. He expressed confidence that the challenge system would ensure fairness for all teams, recommending its introduction after the All-Star break to avoid any issues.
