Seoul: President Lee Jae Myung on Friday emphasized the critical importance of national security and promised exceptional compensation and honor for those who sacrificed their lives to safeguard the nation and its citizens.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee made these statements during a luncheon attended by veterans, bereaved family members, and representatives from veterans' organizations. This event was held shortly after the anniversary of the outbreak of the 1950-53 Korean War. "Protecting the national community is the most important task for the nation. We refer to it as national security," Lee noted during the gathering at the historic presidential compound of Cheong Wa Dae.
President Lee, alongside his wife Kim Hye Kyung, paid tribute to the national flag during the meeting, which honored people of national merit, war veterans, and their families. The event marked the first public occasion at Cheong Wa Dae since Lee assumed office earlier this month.
Lee highlighted that all acts of sacrifice, including involvement in the independence movement, armed conflicts, and efforts to maintain public security, deserve appropriate recognition and rewards. "Those who have made extraordinary sacrifices for the national community must be given corresponding special compensation and honor," he stated. Lee further stressed that such respect is crucial to encourage others to make sacrifices and devote themselves when the nation and community encounter crises.
The luncheon included family members of individuals who participated in significant historical events, such as the independence movement during Japan's colonial rule from 1910-45, the Korean War, pro-democracy movements, and naval clashes with North Korea near the western maritime border.
