Seoul: In January last year, a subcontractor worker at a logistics company took snacks worth just 1,050 won (US$0.75) from a refrigerator at the company's office without permission and ate them. Since then, the worker, who ate a 400 won Choco Pie, a chocolate-covered marshmallow-filled snack cake, and a 650 won Custard cake-treats popular in South Korea-has been charged with workplace theft and mired in a rare legal battle.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the case known as the "Choco Pie theft" trial has sparked public outcry and questions over the role of law. In May, a court fined the defendant 50,000 won for theft, sparking reactions ranging from criticism of what some viewed as excessive punishment to broader discussions over the scope of the legal system and the cases it should handle.
Prosecutors regarded the incident as minor and had filed a summary indictment, but the worker-who maintained innocence and argued a conviction would cost them their job-requested a formal trial.
