SEOUL: More than 70 percent of South Koreans believe that President Yoon Suk Yeol should resign immediately or face impeachment following his controversial declaration of martial law, a recent survey revealed. The poll indicates significant public discontent with Yoon's leadership amid ongoing political turmoil.According to Yonhap News Agency, a survey conducted by Realmeter on Wednesday among 507 individuals aged 18 or older found that 74.8 percent of respondents favored Yoon's immediate departure from office, either through resignation or impeachment. The survey highlighted the extent of public dissatisfaction with the president's recent actions.The survey further revealed that 16.2 percent of respondents supported an "orderly" resignation as suggested by the ruling People Power Party. Additionally, 9 percent of those surveyed were unsure about the issue. The People Power Party has proposed minimizing the fallout from Yoon's martial law declaration by advocating for his "early" and "orderly" resignation , suggesting potential resignation timelines in February or March, followed by snap presidential elections in April or May.The poll also showed that 66.2 percent of respondents reported experiencing stress or trauma due to the martial law crisis. The margin of error for the survey is plus or minus 4.4 percentage points at a 95 percent confidence level.President Yoon has been prohibited from leaving South Korea as investigations by police, prosecutors, and the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials continue into allegations related to his December 3 imposition of martial law. Yoon is also facing another impeachment bid in parliament after surviving a previous vote due to insufficient quorum last Saturday.
