Busan: The new oceans minister has pledged to transform the southeastern city of Busan into the center of South Korea's maritime industry, particularly in the context of emerging Arctic shipping routes.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Oceans Minister Chun Jae-soo emphasized the strategic relocation of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to Busan as a critical move. In his inaugural address, Chun outlined plans to consolidate administrative, industrial, and financial functions in Busan, aiming to foster growth in the maritime and fisheries sectors and facilitate a strategic national shift towards an ocean-based economy.
Chun highlighted Busan's potential as Korea's largest port city, strategically situated approximately 325 kilometers southeast of Seoul. He noted that the city is poised to become the strategic base for the country's maritime industry, considering the anticipated expansion of Arctic shipping routes. These routes could provide more efficient trade pathways between Asia and Europe through the Arctic Ocean.
The ministry's relocation aligns with President Lee Jae Myung's campaign pledge to develop Busan into a global maritime hub and address the economic concentration in Seoul. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to harness the potential of the ocean economy as a new growth engine for South Korea.
