Pohang: A day after making a significant transition in his K League 1 career, Ki Sung-yueng, the new midfielder for Pohang Steelers, announced that he intends to conclude his career on a high note in what is likely to be his final season.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Ki introduced himself as the latest addition to Pohang Steelers following his departure from FC Seoul, where he had spent a decade. Ki had requested a transfer to a team where he could secure more playing time, leading to his release by FC Seoul last week. The 36-year-old midfielder had seen limited action under head coach Kim Gi-dong, appearing in only eight of FC Seoul's first 20 matches this season.
Ki's journey with FC Seoul began in 2006, lasting until 2009, before he embarked on an 11-year European career. He returned to FC Seoul in 2020, ultimately playing 218 matches for the club across all competitions. Now with Pohang, located approximately 270 kilometers southeast of Seoul, Ki expressed his gratitude for the warm reception he has received from the local community.
"I've only been here for a couple of days, but I've already been welcomed by the people of Pohang," Ki said. "When I went out to eat yesterday, people asked me for autographs. I don't have any roots in this city, and I am thankful for this kind of reception. It's going to really help me play well here, and I want to live up to our fans' expectations."
Ki has committed to Pohang until the end of the season and hinted that this might be his last stint as a professional player. Although he had initially planned to end his career with a league title at FC Seoul, he decided to give it one last shot for his family, particularly after his daughter questioned his lack of playing time.
Reflecting on his forced retirement from international play in 2019 due to injury, Ki emphasized his desire to avoid a similar end to his club career. "If I had to deal with the same fate this time, I thought I would have regrets for the rest of my life," Ki added. "That's why I decided to keep on playing and finish my career in style."
While Ki remains open to the possibility of returning in 2026, he currently believes this will be his final season. He is determined to savor every moment on the pitch, with Pohang having 17 matches left this season and currently sitting in fourth place with 32 points.
Ki's departure from FC Seoul was marked by discontent among fans, who heavily criticized Coach Kim during a recent match. Ki expressed his regret at not securing a title with FC Seoul and apologized to the fans, while emphasizing his commitment to performing well with Pohang.
The K League is currently on a break for the East Asian Football Federation E-1 Football Championship, with Pohang scheduled to face league-leaders Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors on July 19. Ki is particularly looking forward to the match against Jeonbuk, whose head coach, Gus Poyet, coached him during his time at Sunderland.
"It will be a special match for me personally, with coach Poyet now with Jeonbuk," Ki said. "I know we are short on midfielders now. I am not going to force the issue but I will try my best to be ready for that match."
