Seoul: First Vice Foreign Minister Park Yoon-joo emphasized the need for a “flexible” diplomatic approach to address the complex challenges presented by today’s geopolitical climate. He stressed that diplomacy extends beyond external relations, directly influencing the daily lives of individuals amidst a rapidly transforming global order.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Park formally assumed his role overseeing bilateral foreign policy following the presidential office’s announcement of his appointment earlier this week. A seasoned diplomat, Park previously served as the deputy chief of the South Korean mission to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
During his inauguration speech, Park highlighted the concept of a “polycrisis” as a result of the rapidly evolving geopolitical landscape. He remarked that diplomacy now impacts not only national survival but also the daily experiences of citizens. Park called for a departure from outdated practices, advocating for diplomatic strategies that can proactively shape international circumstances.
He further emphasized the necessity of “flexible and strategic” thinking to bolster the ministry’s capacity to quickly adapt to the fast-changing foreign policy environment. Park urged for a critical yet humble mindset to develop practical solutions, acknowledging that traditional diplomatic approaches may no longer suffice.
Park also highlighted the importance of understanding the Republic of Korea to better address the concerns of its people, urging ministry staff to participate actively in these efforts. His inauguration coincided with the appointment of Second Vice Foreign Minister Kim Ji-na, who assumed office the previous day to oversee multilateral affairs.
