Seoul: The action fantasy film "Omniscient Reader: The Prophet" aims to engage audiences as active participants rather than passive viewers, according to director Kim Byung-soo.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the director emphasized the film's unique approach during a press conference in Seoul. He highlighted how the movie encourages viewers to contemplate their own actions within the narrative. "One of the film's biggest appeals lies in its ability to make viewers ask themselves, 'What would I have done in that situation?'" Kim explained. By starting the audience and characters from the same point, devoid of special knowledge or powers, the film fosters a strong sense of personal involvement.
The film, adapted from a popular web-based novel, features protagonist Dok-ja, portrayed by Ahn Hyo-seop. Dok-ja, the sole reader of a fictional series that unexpectedly comes to life, teams up with the novel's hero Joong-hyuk, played by Lee Min-ho, and a group of allies. Together, they strive to rewrite the novel's predetermined ending, blending elements of reality and fantasy.
Director Kim, known for works like "The Terror Live" and "Take Point," emphasized the challenge of portraying a seamless blend of reality and fantasy. The production team and cast engaged in extensive discussions to achieve the right balance.
Actor Ahn expressed his interest in the project, noting the film's unprecedented scale in Korea and its philosophical undertones about mutual support during challenging times. Lee shared similar views, emphasizing the importance of collective strength and comfort in an increasingly individualistic society.
BLACKPINK's Jisoo appears as Ji-hye, a high school student devoted to Joong-hyuk. Although she has limited screen time, the director commended her dedication and hard work.
The film, produced by Won Dong-yeon's Realize Pictures, is set to captivate audiences upon its release on July 23. The adaptation has generated significant buzz, following the success of the original web novel and its subsequent webtoon.
