Paju: A practice shell that exploded at an Army artillery unit earlier this week had a history of malfunctions, military officials announced Thursday. The explosion, which occurred during artillery drills in the northwestern city of Paju, resulted in injuries to 10 soldiers, with two in critical condition.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Army had previously suspended the use of this type of practice shell due to malfunctions occurring in 2021, 2022, and 2023. Despite these incidents, the rounds were later cleared for use as they were deemed not defective.
Following the latest explosion, the military has once again halted the use of the practice shell. An investigation is currently underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.
