S. Korea Discusses Industrial Decarbonization at Berlin Climate Club Meeting

Berlin: South Korea discussed ways to help industries achieve carbon neutrality through cooperation with major economies in a recent meeting of the Climate Club, the industry ministry said Thursday. The country attended the third body of the members meeting of the Climate Club held in Berlin and discussed bolstering international cooperation for green transition of heavy industries.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Climate Club, first proposed by Germany during a Group of Seven (G7) summit meeting in January 2022, is a global initiative launched the following year to accelerate the implementation of the Paris Agreement. In the meeting, South Korea discussed with other member states response measures to the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, the world's first carbon tax, and other environment-related trade policies.

The government also addressed Korean industries' views on such policies as part of efforts to prevent them from becoming new trade barriers for local companies, the ministry said.
