Seoul: South Korean Oceans Minister Kang Do-hyung is set to attend the inauguration ceremony of Uruguay's new President, Yamandu Orsi, this weekend. Kang will act as Seoul's special envoy to the event, as confirmed by his office on Tuesday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Kang intends to deliver a congratulatory message from the South Korean government to President Orsi on Saturday. He will also express hopes for strengthening bilateral cooperation in multiple fields. Uruguay is recognized as a significant trading partner for South Korea within Latin America, with the bilateral trade volume reaching US$340 million in the previous year.
The two nations have maintained diplomatic relations since 1964, collaborating in various sectors including politics, the economy, and defense. During his visit, Kang will also engage in discussions with Uruguayan government officials, local companies, and the Korean diaspora residing in Uruguay, as stated by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
