South Korea Delays Wartime OPCON Transfer to 2015

Seoul: South Korea and the United States reached an agreement to postpone the transfer of wartime operational control (OPCON) to Seoul until 2015. This decision was made during a summit between South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and U.S. President Barack Obama.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the initial agreement in 2007 stipulated that wartime OPCON would be transferred to South Korea on April 17, 2012. However, the South Korean presidential office, Cheong Wa Dae, confirmed that Seoul had requested a delay in the transfer. This adjustment reflects the ongoing strategic discussions between the two allies concerning regional security and military readiness.

In other historical events, the South Korean foreign ministry previously lodged a protest with Washington over the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency's wiretapping of President Park Chung-hee's office. The CIA was investigating allegations that a South Korean lobbyist paid substantial bribes to U.S. politicians at the president's behest.

Furthermore, in 2005, South Korean golfer Kim Ju-yun made history by winning the U.S. Women's Open, becoming the third South Korean golfer on the LPGA tour to secure a major title. Her victory at Cherry Hills Country Club in Colorado marked her first U.S. Women's Open win since debuting on the tour in 2000.

In 2010, South Korea launched its first geostationary ocean weather satellite from the Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana. The Chollian satellite, part of a mission by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, was sent into orbit aboard an Ariane 5-ECA rocket, enhancing the country's capabilities in communication and meteorological observations.

In 2013, President Park Geun-hye and Chinese President Xi Jinping held summit talks in Beijing, declaring that a nuclear-armed North Korea was unacceptable. The leaders emphasized that denuclearization aligned with the national interests of both nations.

The same year, Suh Yun-bok, the first Asian champion of the Boston Marathon in 1947, passed away at the age of 94. Suh set a world record with a time of 2:25.39 during his historic win.

Additionally, in 2019, President Moon Jae-in conducted talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Osaka, Japan, ahead of the Group of 20 summit, underscoring the ongoing diplomatic engagements between the two countries.
